Mount Shasta Profiles

Cross-sections of the Cone

The three cross-sectional profiles of the cone show varying concavity depending on the orientation. The cross-section from north to south shows relatively balanced concavity on both sides. However, from the northeast to the southeast the volcano is more concave than on its opposite side.

Field studies could be designed to confirm or reject the hypothesis that climatic factors, glaciation, and/or volcanic activity or some combination of these factors produced this difference in the shape of the volcano.
