The Location

The map of southeast asia shows the location of Peninsular Malaysia and also illustrates the relative sizes of Landsat and ASTER satellite images. Landsat images are much larger than ASTER images as shown by the insets on this map, which are clickable and linked to descriptions.

Landsat images cover about 185 kilometers by 185 kilometers (115 miles by 115 miles), while ASTER images cover only about 60 kilometers by 60 kilometers (38 miles by 38 miles). It takes almost 10 ASTER images to cover the same area as one Landsat image.

What the ASTER images lack in area coverage they partly make up by increased resolution. Several ASTER bands have data units of 15 meters by 15 meters, while the data for the same Landsat bands measure 30 meter by 30 meters.
