The Thai-Malay peninsula extends southward from the mountains of south Asia. In Malaysia the term Peninsular Malaysia is used officially to distinguish this region from East Malaysia located on the island of Borneo, shared with Indonesia.
The island of Penang, named after the betel nut, is one of several small islands lying to the west in the Indian Ocean. Unlike many other islands, Penang is linked to the mainland by a bridge, one of the longest in the world.
Georgetown, the main urban area, has many historical sites now regarded as part of the national heritage. Near the town center and the old port, the Esplanade is a popular location, mainly because of its playing field/fair-ground and its pavilion used for civic events.
While urbanization is spreading to all parts of the island and to the mainland, the town center still maintains its vitality. In fact, heritage groups must work hard to preserve historic sites from destruction by developers.
